Cilantro, Norwood Indian restaurant in Norwood, Adelaide

Chef Namit Mangal (of Port Adelaide's Spice N Ice) has opened this new venture with the aim of expelling the myth, largely perpetrated in Australia, that the traditional butter chickens and lamb kormas of North India are all the country has to offer by way of food.

A glimpse at the menu at this cool eatery will have the mind boggling at how far from the truth and how outdated our expectations have become. This is the modern, innovative food of India today. It's what the cool young things are eating from Mumbai to New York, and it's time Adelaideans, so proud of their foodie town and its traditions, got on board. Check out the roti bread lasagne with layers of saffron rice vegie curry and cheese, or the smoked salmon with coconut coulis and wild lime coulis, and you'll agree there's much still undiscovered about this beloved cuisine.

Straddling the corner of Queen Street and The Parade, there's plenty of alfresco seating to both sides, and a very hip wine and beer list completes the picture to make this one very cool little spot. Watch out for weekend breakfasts at Cilantro, coming soon.

The Bombay Bicycle Club in ovingham, Adelaide

This restaurant is decked out in gloriously OTT, last-days-of-the-Raj style, complete with a two-storey-high waterfall, palm trees, a life-sized tiger and safari suit-clad staff. In keeping with the riotous atmosphere of the space, the menu plays free and easy with tradition interpretations of Indian cuisine. Look hard enough and you will find familiar dishes such as lamb rogan josh or a vegetarian korma, hidden among more unusual variations such as the 'Rikki Tikki Tavi Tindaloo' - a frighteningly spicy curry with tandoori chicken sausages. Alternatively, diners can all but turn their back on the subcontinental theme and tuck into a pizza (with toppings ranging from the vaguely Indian to a Peking duck variety), or spicy battered barramundi with curry mayonnaise.

The Red Ass Indian Restaurant, semaphore, Adelaide

The Red Ass Indian Restaurant
The name's a bit cheeky, but you've got to love any place that's named after a donkey (though there's yet to be an 'Eeyore' restaurant to my knowledge). Since its colourful debut in 2000, The Red Ass has carved out a local reputation for its red-hot mix of Indian and Thai cuisines, which have much more in common than you might initially expect, given their strong emphases on spices and curries. From Indian fish curry to Thai red prawn curry to chicken laksa, the menu here is diverse without being overworked, and luckily for coeliacs and vegetarians, there's no shortage of foods to suit these dietary needs.

This offer Gluten-Free, Indian, Tibetan and Vegetarian.

Singapore House Indian restaurant In Adelaide

If you’re familiar with Singapore House’s sister restaurant, British India, the decor will not come as a surprise. Actually, it will. While you expect the wow factor, it’s a question of how the wow will be delivered. Part-owner Walter Ventura is the interior design maestro of his group’s restaurants. At Singapore House his artistic antics continue with more animal heads rearing their taxidermied heads alongside mounted tortoise shells. It is a mix of Doctor Doolittle and the Raffles Room. A lofty skylight and clusters of suspended lampshades warm the room, but are beautifully outshone by a collection of butterflies. Hundreds of the colourful beauties are individually framed to form the feature wall of the “Butterfly Room”; an intimate, rustic space adjoining the bar, designed for the cosy enjoyment of exotic thali dishes and perhaps a “Raffles rum punch”, “Singapore House sling” or “orange blossom sherbet”.

With aesthetics as charismatic as this, it’s easy to lose sight of the food, but chef Palam presents a menu as well considered as the decor. A blackboard announces Chinese, Malaysian and Indian fare, with Nonya (Nyonya) cooking bringing them together. That is the fusion of ingredients from Malaysia and China as well as Malaysia and India. Roasted Nonya kingfish demonstrates this with meaty, lemon-grassed chunks resting in a sweet coconut curry. Don’t be afraid to tackle the chilli crab. Bright red pincers are provided to crack the claws free of their flesh, but the ultimate pleasure lies in sucking the sweetness from the crustacean and letting its juices to dribble from your lips. The chilli factor is unexpectedly soft, unlike the vindaloo osso bucco. Its fire will “warm” you for days. While the presentation of the udang (prawn) salad needs refinement, that of the deep-fried whole Robarra barramundi is a cracker.

Raj On taj Indian Restaurant In hyde Park, Adelaide

This place is a real find, literally. A few steps shy of King William Road, you may not meet it directly but be introduced by word-of-mouth. Raj on Taj is an eatery quite easy to strike up a friendship with. Its side-street entrance welcomes you into an atrium dining area. It is the first of several rooms throughout that collectively seat well over 100 people. Each space is so individual and cosy, however, that you feel like a personally invited guest no matter where you sit. Open fireplaces add further warmth to the charming decor of tapestries, traditional marionettes, collectables, copper work and a gorgeous ornate swing which frames the corner bar nook. “All are imported from India,” owner Vijay Singh says proudly. Claret-coloured tablecloths that didn’t vanish with the ‘80s are in residence, but manage to blend in among matching painted feature walls.

The linen has been known to catch the crumbs of some famous mouths – international cricketers, Aussie footballers and the occasional astronaut, to name a few. Regardless of your sporting prowess or moon-landing ability, however, you are on a winner with the menu. Its prices will have you licking your lips before they have even touched the first piece of buttery garlic naan. (On that note, the menu cover proclaims “the naan talks” – you may have to ask Vijay about that). Tandoori raan feeds two with its marinated leg of lamb, while the oven’s entree platter should do likewise with chicken and fish tikka, and tandoor “tail prawns”. A robust array of vegetable dishes impresses with cumin and chilli onion rings, and paneer tikka masala – baked cottage cheese pan-fried in masala – both of which are sure to send you to the moon.

The Village Indian Restaurant in Adelaide

The Village Indian Restaurant Born on the 20th of October 2008 we were welcomed with open arms by the food lovers of Adelaide. We began our journey on the premises of La Guillotine a French restaurant for more than 25 years. Two people conceived the idea of opening up an Indian restaurant in Adelaide-Australia. One is a man famed for his culinary skills and is no stranger to gougerians - Chef Bishnu Kharel (of the former 'Indian Brasserie') and the other is Manoj Kundrapu who loves people and is very passionate about hospitality. Both these wonderful people shared one golden concept and made it their motto “Good Food + Good Service = Happy Customers”.

As the old saying goes “Business happens across the table”. We provide a variety of banquet options. You can concentrate fully on your business dealings while we take total care of your food and other requirements.
