Cilantro, Norwood Indian restaurant in Norwood, Adelaide

Chef Namit Mangal (of Port Adelaide's Spice N Ice) has opened this new venture with the aim of expelling the myth, largely perpetrated in Australia, that the traditional butter chickens and lamb kormas of North India are all the country has to offer by way of food.

A glimpse at the menu at this cool eatery will have the mind boggling at how far from the truth and how outdated our expectations have become. This is the modern, innovative food of India today. It's what the cool young things are eating from Mumbai to New York, and it's time Adelaideans, so proud of their foodie town and its traditions, got on board. Check out the roti bread lasagne with layers of saffron rice vegie curry and cheese, or the smoked salmon with coconut coulis and wild lime coulis, and you'll agree there's much still undiscovered about this beloved cuisine.

Straddling the corner of Queen Street and The Parade, there's plenty of alfresco seating to both sides, and a very hip wine and beer list completes the picture to make this one very cool little spot. Watch out for weekend breakfasts at Cilantro, coming soon.

The Bombay Bicycle Club in ovingham, Adelaide

This restaurant is decked out in gloriously OTT, last-days-of-the-Raj style, complete with a two-storey-high waterfall, palm trees, a life-sized tiger and safari suit-clad staff. In keeping with the riotous atmosphere of the space, the menu plays free and easy with tradition interpretations of Indian cuisine. Look hard enough and you will find familiar dishes such as lamb rogan josh or a vegetarian korma, hidden among more unusual variations such as the 'Rikki Tikki Tavi Tindaloo' - a frighteningly spicy curry with tandoori chicken sausages. Alternatively, diners can all but turn their back on the subcontinental theme and tuck into a pizza (with toppings ranging from the vaguely Indian to a Peking duck variety), or spicy battered barramundi with curry mayonnaise.

Having been Prospect's best kept secret for years (and doing a roaring trade with the locals alone), the cat's been let out of the bag recently, and more and more people have been venturing from all over for the city to see what the fuss is about.

The restaurant is separated into distinct dining rooms and private areas, making for a personal atmosphere. A dimly lit outdoor area at the rear (the Buddha Garden) is intimate and quiet, and it's popular with couples on warm summer nights.
